German Pinscher

German Pinscher,The German Pinscher, a Medium Sized German Terrier

The German Pinscher is a fairly new introduction to the UK, only arriving here in 1980, though the first standard was published in Germany, its country of origin, in 1881.  It is believed to date back to before 1835, and the litters contained smooth and rough coated dogs.  The current standard requires a  short and smooth coat.  "Pinscher" is German for "Terrier", though the German terriers were much larger than British terriers and were certainly too long in the leg to go to ground.  However, they do make excellent guards and were used as such in farms.

They are a smart middle-sized dog, up to about 48cm and although strong and well-muscled are elegant with a flowing outline.  The smooth coat which is from fawn to stag red or black and blue with reddish tan markings is easy to keep, a hound glove and a chamois leather will keep him looking smart.

They are excellent family dogs, though like all working breeds they do need to understand that their place is at the bottom of the family pack.  They enjoy being a housedog, and certainly are not kennel dogs, their need for company is too great.  Early socialisation and introduction to cats and other family pets is vital if they are to be reliable as they grow up.  They have plenty of energy so must be offered an outlet for this or they may become destructive.  An attractive dog, be aware that he does have strong guarding qualities so warning-off strangers is an integral part of his nature.
