Canaan Dog

Canaan Dog

Recognised by the Kennel Club since 1970 , the Canaan Dog is regarded as the National dog of Israel, a Pariah dog of the Middle East.  He is a breed of considerable antiquity with ancient rock carvings found in Israel depicting him. The Canaan Dog Breed Standard is based on the FCI for the time being as there is a lack of unanimity amongst current breeders on what breed characteristics should be aimed for, particularly in coat colour.

What is agreed, however, is that the Canaan Dog is a square, medium sized dog measuring between 20 - 24" and used for his guarding qualities; Bedouins and Druse people have long used Canann Dogs as guards but do not breed them, instead taking dogs from feral litters. His coat is harsh and of short to medium length and colours permitted are shades of red, white, black or spotted, with white markings allowed on all colours.  Grey, brindle, black and tan or tricolours are considered undesirable.

Loyal to his owners, alert and intelligent the Canaan Dog is a natural guard and is aloof with strangers.  The breed clubs should be able to give you some more information and let you know at what shows you are likely to be able to see some examples of the Canaan Dog.

The time to make sure that the Canaan Dog is the right breed for you is before you bring him home. If you and your dog are going to be a good match speak to breeders, Breed Clubs, and generally find out as much as you can about the breed.

Understanding dog psychology, and what his motivations are will save a lot of confusion and misunderstandings for both you and him. Many mistakes can be avoided, and quick solutions reached if you have the basics of puppy training to guide you through all the early settling in difficulties.  It helps, too, to have some idea of basic healthcare so you can make informed judgements about whether a visit to the vet is necessary or if there is a simple remedy.  For example, many cases of upset tummies are best cured by 24 hour starvation.  The books we have chosen will be able to guide you as to whether your dog can be treated at home, or a visit to the surgery is necessary.

Canaan Dog Rescue and Rehoming

Contact a Breed Club. They should all be able to give you information about dogs requiring homes and procedures for re-homing; if you are in the unfortunate position of having to re-home your own pet, please go through breed rescue. They will not be judgmental and are best able to find the right permanent home for your dog.
