Some of the Toy breeds are surprisingly game and enjoy mini-agility and the intelligent Maltese even takes to Obedience.  Certainly the Cavalier King Charles, Bichon Frise, Papillon, Yorkshire Terrier and Griffon Bruxellois are worth introducing to Agility; the Mini Agility at Crufts is a delight to watch - whilst it is competitive there doesn't seem to be the single minded determination to win that there is in conventional Agility.  Fun appears to be the motivation.

All these breeds are, of course, small and present a problem to elderly people in that they can get under the feet which is something that should be borne in mind.  They are also, on the whole, rather small and delicate for a family with young children.  Of course, many children know perfectly well how to treat dogs but small children can be unintentionally rough.  The Cavalier adores children though his cousin the King Charles doesn't share this affinity.  Similarly, the Bichon, Australian Silky, Maltese and Yorkshire Terriers are excellent with children who treat them with due care.  The Affenpinscher looks irresistible with his little monkey face but probably doesn't have the patience for children.  The Pekingese and Pug, too, make good family dogs as does the Lowchen.  Some are distinctly fragile  - like the Chihuahua and Italian Greyhound and would not make good playmates for children.  However, all dogs vary within a breed and it is vital to establish temperament before acquiring a puppy.
