Pomeranian
The Pomeranian first appeared in England as a pair imported by Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III in 1767 although these were much larger than the dogs of today probably as much as 12kg as compared with today's weight of 2.5kg; Gainsborough painted some portraits of her which included the Pomeranians. The next Royal interest was when Queen Victoria saw some in Florence in 1883 and introduced the Pomeranian to the Royal kennels; six were exhibited at Crufts in 1891 and they all won prizes.
Whilst Britain is considered to be responsible for the development of the breed, the Pomeranian derives from the German Spitz who was bred from the larger sled-hauling dogs of the Arctic; the German Spitz is a member of the utility Group. Selective breeding has gradually bred the Pomeranian down from the original much larger dog but he retains his original Spitz coat pattern of a dense undercoat and harsh topcoat which requires careful attention to get the best out of it. All colours are allowed, including particolours though whole colours are preferred. The Breed Standard has detailed descriptions of what is correct.
The Pomeranian is dainty and extrovert little dog, height is usually no more than 11" and weight up to 2kg for dogs and a little more for bitches. Generally a sweet-tempered dog he makes a delightful companion with his little foxy face and bright intelligent eyes; not one for long walks, he will fit very happily into an adult household.
