The Maltese Terrier is a member of the Bichon family of dogs and has links to the island of Malta although similar small white dogs were widespread in Europe for centuries; there is evidence that the Maltese was present in Roman times and was bred solely as a pet. He is a delightful little dog, small, no taller than 10" and weighing up to 3kg but there is no point in acquiring one if you are not prepared to put in a good deal of work on the coat. Long, pure white and silky he can look extraordinarily glamorous if the work is put in but it means daily grooming; although it does not shed it matts readily.
Although the Maltese Terrier is small, he is extremely spirited and will live perfectly happily with sensible children and has none of the reserve that some Toys show. He is intelligent and eager to please and suits obedience well and also mini-agility. Full of fun, he is a really cheerful dog but his coat is a major commitment.

No designer breeds or puppy farmers, just breeders who care about their dogs as much as you do.
