| The Japanese Chin is originally from China and found his way to Japan as a gift from the Empress of China to the Empress of Japan, and he became a favourite of the British Royals when Queen Alexandra acquired some. The word 'Chin' means cat-like and he does wash his face in the same way that a cat does. As befits a dog favoured by Royalty he has a very aristocratic bearing, with a perpetual look of well-bred astonishment. In some countries The Japanese Chin is known as the Japanese Spaniel. He is small at a maximum of 10" and 3.2kg in weight; the Breed Standard calls for him to be "Daintier the better, providing type, quality and soundness are not sacrificed". His coat is profuse; it is soft, straight and silky and is either black and white or red and white, the clearer and brighter the red the better. The Japanese Chin needs regular and careful grooming; if his coat is not looked after he will leave it on the sofa or your guests! A lively and happy dog, the Japanese Chin is not sufficiently robust to thrive in a busy family home but makes a marvellously cheerful companion dog.
