Chinese Crested
The Chinese Crested Dog is a unique breed in that not only is it permissible in two entirely different coat patterns - the Hairless, which has a crest on the head, socks on the feet and a plumed tail and the Powderpuff, which has a 'soft veil of long hair', but also in two body types. There is the Deer, which is racy and fine-boned and the Cobby which is heavier in bone and body. All types are shown together. The maximum height is 13" and weight should be no more than 5.5kg.
The Chinese Crested Dog does come from China and it is said that they were owned by families of the Han dynasty who ruled in China from 206 BC to AD 220, and were guardians of the treasure houses. There was evidently a larger variety who was used for hunting.
The Chinese Crested Dog first appeared in the United States in 1885 and enjoyed limited popularity through till 1926 after which they virtually disappeared until the 1970s. They have achieved limited popularity in the UK, but their coats mean that they do require a specialised care, with frequent moisturising and protection from excessive sunlight, together with general protection against the elements.
TheChinese Crested are fastidious dogs, keeping themselves very clean, quite robust and active they make good companions and are sufficiently alert to make them useful housedogs. The skin and coat can be in any colour or combination of colours.

Chinese Crested Dog Rescue and Rehoming
Contact a Breed Club. They should be able to give you information about dogs requiring homes and procedures for re-homing; if you are in the unfortunate position of having to re-home your own Chinese Crested, please go through breed rescue. They will not be judgmental and are best able to find the right permanent home for him.
There is also a dedicated Chinese Crested Dog Rescue website, or phone Mrs Bush on 01745 561722, and the Chinese Crested Club of GB has a rescue website, too.
If you are looking for a puppy contact the Breed Clubs and the Breeders listed and visit the puppyfinder website where there is a great deal of information on hereditary conditions. If you are a Breeder and wish to advertise your puppies puppyfinder is an excellent showcase.
