Affenpinscher

The Affenpinscher comes from Germany and is one of the oldest of the European Toy dogs, having been in existence since the 17th century, with similar dogs appearing in portraits of the 15th and 16th centuries.  'Affe' is German for monkey and 'Pinscher' means terrier - hence monkey terrier, and he certainly has a very mischievous monkey face, which has earned him another name, 'The Black Devil'.

He is a fearless little dog,  at 9½ - 11" and weighing no more that 3½kg he believes himself much larger and is quite fearless.  The Breed Standard describes him as "carrying itself with comic seriousness" and that is a very apt description of this entertaining little dog.

He earns his keep, too as he gives good warning of strangers.  The late Miriam Dickinson of the Champflower Affix bred both Affenpinschers and Deerhounds, and it was the tiny dog who protected the home with his protective bark.  Unlike some Toys he does not appear fragile and is full of energy and affection.  His black coat is rough and harsh and needs no special care. A town or country dog, the Affenpinscher is perfectly adaptable, like most Toys just seeking the companionship of his owner.

He is probably behind the Griffon Bruxellois who has the same monkey expression.
