The Welsh Terrier is another dog whose ancestry can be traced to the Old English Black and Tan Terrier and he is one of the oldest distinct terrier breeds with clear references being made to him in the middle of the 18th century. He is a very hardy all-purpose terrier, used around the farm and out with the Foxhounds and Otterhounds where he would follow the fox or otter to earth. He was recognised by the Kennel Club in 1886.
The Welsh Terrier is not quite so full of himself as some terriers and less quarrelsome than most of the long-legged terriers, which makes him an easier housedog, but he does need to be clear about who is in charge; all terriers, particularly the males can become little tyrants if they are not put firmly in their place. He enjoys plenty of exercise but will adapt himself town life quite happily.
He is around 15" at the withers and appears well balanced and compact. The preferred colour for the Welsh Terrier is black and tan, though black grizzle and tan in acceptable. The coat is harsh and wiry and needs regular trimming.
