The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier (above, Irish Champion Kellynack Chynora Avec Hobel) is from the West coast of Ireland where he was an all-round farm dog, herding, guarding and hunting all kinds of vermin. Never a hunt terrier, he was more of a farm dog than a sporting one.
The Soft Coated Wheaten coat is an unusual one for a terrier; it is soft, silky and wavy or with large soft curls and always wheaten in colour. It is not trimmed, though can be tidied for show purposes, but does need to be kept thoroughly groomed. He measures up to 19½" and is solidly built. He stands four square, short-backed and alert with an alert head carriage. Although the Soft Coated Wheaten is not a particularly popular terrier, he is a very good housedog; he loves family life and is full of energy and is reasonably biddable, though training takes some patience. Puppies are not readily available but they really are a lovely and very individual breed. To read the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier Breed Standard click here.
