The Smooth Fox Terrier is extremely popular throughout the world and is amongst the most alert and lively members of the Terrier Group. He almost certainly derives from the same terrier stock that produced the Bull Terrier and the Manchester Terrier: His breed type was clearly established by the late 1800s and the original breed standard was drawn up in 1876.
The Smooth Fox Terrier is described as "like a well made, short-backed hunter, covering a lot of ground", and is certainly a beautifully balanced unexaggerated dog. His hunting and chasing instincts remain very strong which means that he can be highly unreliable near livestock. They love to know what's going on and if that means darting through an open door to find out, they will. It is important to assert control as early as possible over the puppy because he is rather a wilful dog.
Whilst he will not search out a fight if provoked he is quite fearless, so when out with him it is as well to keep a close eye on any interaction between him and any other dog; as with all Terriers it is the dogs who are most on their toes. An excellent housedog, friendly and cheerful but his love of chasing anything that moves does require owners to be aware of what he is thinking about.
The coat is simplicity itself; straight and smooth and white or mainly white with tan, black and tan or black markings. Whilst he is taller than most terriers at around 15" he is built on fairly racy lines which makes him seem smaller.

Contact a Breed Club. They should be able to give you information about dogs requiring homes and procedures for re-homing; if you are in the unfortunate position of having to re-home your own dog, please go through breed rescue. They will not be judgmental and are best able to find the right permanent home for your dog.
