Scottish Terrier,The Scottish Terrier, Ch Stuane Obsession

The Scottish Terrier (above, Ch Stuane Obsession) is another of the terriers who originated in the Highlands of Scotland and first acquired the name of the Aberdeen Terrier; by the late 19th century the breed type had been fixed and in 1881 the first Scottish Terrier Breed Standard was drawn up; Captain Gordon Murray was responsible for promoting the breed  and was strongly supported by the founder of The Kennel Club, Mr Sewallis Evelyn Shirley.

The Scottish Terrier appears slightly distant to those who aren't his friends, and indeed P G Wodehouse did little to enhance his reputation with the Aberdeen Terrier Bartholomew who attacks policemen's ankles and has a generally fearsome reputation in "The Code of the Woosters".  However, he is balanced by the charming McIntosh, another Scottish Terrier in "Very Good Jeeves".  And like the troublesome Fox Terrier,  Montmorency, in Jerome K Jerome's "Three Men in a Boat",  these portraits are generated by deep affection. However, to his family he is a wonderful character, full of fun and alert for anything which calls on him to perform his duties as the guardian of the house.

Familiarly black, he can also be wheaten and brindle in any shade.  His coat takes a lot of work to present to show standard but the pet is much better off clipped regularly to keep him in his typical outline.  Not tall, at around 11" he is fairly thick-set and makes a very solid picture, suggesting plenty of power combined with the sense of a very active alert dog.

An intelligent and dignified dog, he Scottish Terrier doesn't play the fool like many of the terriers but he will show terrific loyalty and devotion to his family.  Not a coward, but neither is he one to back down when provoked.
