Manchester Terrier
The Manchester Terrier is a very smart elegant terrier, his principal ancestor is the Old English Black and Tan Terrier and though over the years he has become refined from the original street dog - the city cousin of the farmyard terrier - his evolution has been natural. Some authorities have suggested that the Whippet was introduced at one stage but there is no evidence to support this. Obviously from Manchester, his task as a working terrier was mainly ratting and although now more likely to be found as a house dog than a working terrier can still acquit himself well.
The colouring is only a rich black and tan with the colour distribution very important; the coat itself is smooth, short and glossy. About middle sized for a long-legged terrier at 16" he is quite variable in weight and a well-muscled dog can be surprisingly heavy.
The Manchester Terrier is an amenable dog; although a terrier his instincts are not sharp like some, and he is not quick to take offence. The Manchester makes a very loyal pet but has a more discriminating approach than most terriers when making friends; choosing who he offers his loyalty to but once decided absolutely devoted.
A very adaptable dog, he will settle equally well in town or country and will always look smart and tidy. A teaspoon of boiled linseed in his feed daily will make his coat gleam and a polish with a chamois will add the finishing touch.

They should be able to give you information about terriers requiring homes and procedures for re-homing; if you are in the unfortunate position of having to re-home your own dog, please go through breed rescue.
