Lost and Stolen Dogs

We have decided to give those people who have had the misfortune to lose their dog, whether by straying or theft, the opportunity to publicise their search through this site.  With 160,000 visitors a month we feel we can offer a useful service to people in this heartbreaking situation.

Recently we featured Pip, the English Springer Spaniel from Kettering who was snatched whilst being exercised.  The family created a great deal of publicity and the result was that a policeman recognised Pip from a poster he had seen and Pip was happily re-unted with his family.

If you have had your dog stolen or lost just email us the details, with a picture if possible, and we will list it here.

It is believed they were taken to Essex.

Protecting Your Dog From Theft

Pip's case was extremely unusual, being snatched whilst out for a walk with his owners.  Most dogs are stolen from their homes, and most particularly from a kennel in the garden.

  • Dogs particularly at risk are those left for periods of time without anyone at home in an insecure kennel.  If there is no alternative to kennelling your dogs, then make sure the building is as secure as it can be.  Fairly cheap alarm systems can be obtained to fix on the kennel door.
  • Make sure you have an-up-to date photo of your dog which clearly identifies him so that you have a good image to use if the worst happens.
  • Dogs must, by law wear an identifying name tag.  Don't put your dog's pet name on the tag.
  • Don't leave your dog tied up whilst you go into a shop.
  • Don't leave him in the car.
  • Make sure your garden is secure. Escapers are can jump over, dig under or dart through; you will know which sort your dog is so take precautions.

Microchip and Tattoo

Collars with name tags can be removed but tattoos and microchips are permanent identification and have led to many dogs and owners being reunited. Tattoos are applied quickly and painlessly and do have a deterrent effect on thieves. Almost all vets offer a micro-chipping service, and a microchip is essential if you plan to take your dog abroad.

Insurance

When choosing an Insurance policy for your dog, check that it offers cover for advertising and rewards for lost and stolen dogs. Halifax Pet Insurance is a company that does offer this and at a stressful time it is good to know that those costs are covered.
