The Maremma Sheepdog is named after the southern Tuscan plains of Maremma which have, for centuries, been used as grazing lands. As with almost all the European sheepdogs his task was to guard the flocks from wolves, bears and rustlers as well as protecting the homestead. His origins are uncertain but he is believed to be descended from the white working dogs of the Magyars and bears a superficial resemblance to the Kuvasz, Pyrenean Mountain Dog and Anatolian Shepherd which hints at some sort of common ancestry.
The Maremma Sheepdog is a big dog, at up to 28½", with bitches somewhat smaller, and heavily built, dogs weighing up to 45kg. The coat is thick and weatherproof, lying close to the body and rather harsh with a dense undercoat; he is always white though some shading of ivory or fawn is allowed. A coat that needs regular grooming if you don't want to find long white hairs everywhere.
In line with the responsibilities that have been given to him over the centuries the Maremma is an independent dog, not amenable to training and has a highly developed guarding instinct which he uses to guard his family and home. He is another breed that requires to be dominated from an early age if a successful relationship is to be forged.
The Maremma Sheepdog was first imported into the UK in 1872 but it was not until 1976 that an effort was made to establish the breed here. Still a working dog in his homeland he holds true to his working roots and needs ample exercise. Numerically he is still not a large breed and acquiring a puppy could take some patience.

Maremma Sheepdog Rescue and Rehoming
Contact a Breed Club. They should be able to give you information about dogs requiring homes and procedures for re-homing; if you are in the unfortunate position of having to re-home your own dog, please go through breed rescue. They will not be judgmental and are best able to find the right permanent home for your dog.
