Malinois

The Groenendael, black with a long body coat was developed by a restaurant owner; a brewer originated the long-coated Tervueren which like the Malinois is in shades of red, fawn and grey with black overlay. The Malinois, from Malines has a short and dense coat and the Laekenois is named after the Royal residence of Queen Marie Henriette, Chateau de Laeken whose favourite variety this was. The Laekenois has a harsh wiry coat and is a reddish fawn with black shading and remains the rarest variety in the UK. However, he is very popular with the US Military and is used by them for war work.

In common with most mainland European sheepdogs, the Belgian Shepherd Dog is a guard as well as a herding dog and has so many generations of working dog behind him that he requires to have both his mind and body stretched.  He is an alert, active dog who needs ample exercise and mental challenge to prevent him becoming bored; medium sized at up to 26" and weighing around 28kg he is not well-suited to a lazy life; obedience suits him very well and he responds very well to training.

They should be able to give you information about varities of Belgian Shepherd Dog requiring homes and procedures for re-homing; if you are in the unfortunate position of having to re-home your own dog , please go through breed rescue. They will not be judgmental and are best able to find the right permanent home for your him.
