Spanish Greyhound (Galgo)

TGalgohe Spanish Greyhound, the Galgo, is a hunting and coursing dog in his home country, but like greyhounds world wide, once their useful life is over they are frequently cruelly disposed of.  Dogs do not even have the mercy of a bullet, but are killed in all manner of appalling ways.

Rescue of Galgos is a massive task, being undertaken by Scooby in Spain and Greyhounds in Need in the UK; GRIN is active in supporting Galgo rescue in the USA.

Ibizan Hounds Rescued to US

Feeding Military Dogs

Conservative MP Mike Penning has obtained figures which show that the budget per meal is greater for dogs than it is for servicemen.  Allegedly, the budget for meals for troops is £1.51 a day, whilst the budget for dogs is £2.63.  A Ministry of Defence spokesperson disputed the figures, saying that whilst the figure of £1.51 was corrrect. the daily cost for dogs was variable.


Irish Greyhound Mutilation- no Charges

An Irish Greyhound found with her ears hacked off has not resulted in any prosecution, even though previous owners have been identified through DNA tests. 

Ireland is the foremost greyhound breeding country in the world and there is a great deal of cruelty associated with it.

Norwegian Crufts Group Winner Dies at 7

The Flat-Coated Retriever, Sh Ch/Norw/Fin/Pol Ch Almanza Far & Glyg who won the Gundog Group at Crufts this year has died from what is believed to be a tick-borne disease, contracted in his home country, Norway.


Cocker Spaniel Whelps 11 Pups

Pippa, a 5 year old Orange Roan Cocker has had a litter of 11 puppies, all born naturally.  Born on May 28, this is nearly three times the average litter size of 4 puppies.


Docked Breeds Show Regulations

The Kennel Club has announced that any dog docked after April 6 2007 or March 28 for shows held in Wales, cannot be shown where the public pay an admission fee.  This applies to shows in Scotland and Northern Ireland, too.


Crufts Announce Qualifiers for 2008

Details of how to qualify for Crufts 2008 have now been published.


PAT (Pets as Therapy) Dogs

Pets as Therapy have a long waiting list of establishments who would like PAT dogs to visit.

RSPCA Vet Honoured

Chris Laurence, Veterinary Director of the Dog's Trust has received an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours.  Prior to working with the Dog's Trust, he held the same role with the RSPCA for 5 years.  He is also a Trustee of the Feline Advisory Bureau and speaks at home and abroad on animal welfare issues.
