Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever,The Candadian Water Dog, Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever (known as a Toller to his friends) originated in Canada and was used to lure (Tollen is the Old English word for entice or lure) and retrieve waterfowl. This was done by sticks being repeatedly thrown along the beach for the dog to retrieve, which he would do with great enthusiasm wagging his tail furiously which attracted the attention of the ducks or geese; a fatal fascination, sadly for them, because when they came within range they were shot by the waiting hunters. The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever then swam out to collect the kill. He is an excellent swimmer with webbed feet to assist him, and a water repellent coat.

He is a medium sized, powerful dog measuring about 45 - 51cm and weighing up to 51lbs. The coat is of medium length, lying close to the body with feathering on the chest, legs and tail; he is in all shades of red to orange, with or without white tipping to the tail and white on the feet, chest and a blaze on the head. Having been selectively bred over the years for his eagerness to retrieve he is a very energetic and active dog. This makes the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrriever a natural at agility and flyball, and also has a nose good enough for tracking.

He was introduced into the UK in 1988 and has acquired an enthusiastic following since then. A playful and intelligent dog he makes a really excellent companion for the family who wants to have fun with their dog.

The time to make sure that this is the right breed for you is before you bring him home; if you and your Toller are to be happy together there is plenty of research to be done.  Even if you do not intend to work him, having an appreciation of Gundog Training will help you understand why he behaves as he does.

In addition to learning what kind of behaviour is specific to Gundogs, understanding your dog, and what his motivations are on a more general level can save a lot of confusion and misunderstandings for both you and him. Many mistakes can be avoided, and quick solutions reached if you have the basics of puppy training to guide you through all the early settling in difficulties.  It helps, too, to have some idea of basic healthcare so you can make informed judgements about whether a visit to the vet is necessary or if there is a simple remedy.  For example, many cases of upset tummies are best cured by 24 hour starvation.  The books we have chosen will be able to guide you as to whether your dog can be treated at home, or a visit to the surgery is necessary.
