English Pointer,Liver and White English Pointer

The English Pointer is believed to have originated in Spain but in the last two or three centuries has become very distinctively British  When he first arrived in the UK he was used in tandem with the Greyhound for hare coursing; the Pointer would locate the hare and the Greyhound course it.  His ability to locate and 'point' game came into its own with the introduction of the flintlock.

the English Pointer developed from the Spanish Pointer as a result of judicious cross-breeding; the breeds used were probably Foxhounds and Bloodhounds for scenting, Greyhounds for speed and Bullterriers for tenacity.  By the end of the 18thC the breed was recognisably the Pointer of today, regarded as one of the finest upland bird dogs in the world.

He is described in the Breed Standard as "a series of graceful curves", which begins at the tip of his nose, leading to a slightly concave foreface, then raising over skull to the occipital bone.  He is a very clean in outline and has a lovely balanced elegance; he conveys an aristocratic outlook, together with a kind and even-tempered nature.

The Pointer is a little larger than most members of the HPR group; dogs measure up to 69cm and when in working condition weigh as much as 75lbs.  The English Pointer's movement is characterised by his habit of carrying his head high as he tests the air whilst he moves easily with plenty of drive covering the ground well. A hackney gait is a serious fault.

The smooth fine, hard coat has a decided sheen; colour combinations a lemon, orange, liver and black, all with white.  Self-colours and tricolours are also acceptable.

The English Pointer is perfectly adaptable to life as a family dog but does thrive in a hunting environment.  If not given the opportunity to work with the gun he should, at least, be given scope for using his natural scenting skills.

Selected Books

The time to make sure that this is the right breed for you is before you bring him home; if you and your Pointer are to be happy together there is plenty of research to be done.  Even if you do not intend to work him, having an appreciation of Gundog Training will help you understand why he behaves as he does.

In addition to learning what kind of behaviour is specific to Gundogs, understanding your dog, and what his motivations are on a more general level can save a lot of confusion and misunderstandings for both you and him. Many mistakes can be avoided, and quick solutions reached if you have the basics of puppy training to guide you through all the early settling in difficulties.  It helps, too, to have some idea of basic healthcare so you can make informed judgements about whether a visit to the vet is necessary or if there is a simple remedy.  For example, many cases of upset tummies are best cured by 24 hour starvation.  The books we have chosen will be able to guide you as to whether your dog can be treated at home, or a visit to the surgery is necessary.
